DISTINGUISHING ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS INCLUDE A CORNER TOWER, DECORATIVE WINDOW MOLDINGS, AND A WRAP-AROUND PORCH DESIGNED WITH TURNED POSTS AND A DENTIL TRIM. SHINGLES APPEAR IN THE OPEN ENDS OF THE GABLES TO THE FRONT AND SIDE, AND CHAMFERED CORNERS ARE PRESENT ON THE TWO-STORIED, FRONT-FACING BAY. THIS RESIDENCE, BUILT IN 1899, IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. (SEE BIB. REF. A). ACCOMPANYING THE HOUSE IS A GARAGE; NO INTENSIVE SURVEY EXISTS DESCRIBING THIS STRUCTURE, HOWEVER. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: CHARLES PHILLIPS, PROPRIETOR OF DODGEVILLE'S HOTEL HIGBEE, WAS BORN IN NEARBY MINERAL POINT IN 1860. INITIALLY, PHILLIPS WENT INTO FARMING, IMPROVING ACREAGES IN THE TOWN OF WALDWICK AND IN THE TOWN OF MINERAL POINT. AFTER SUCCESSFUL VENTURES IN THESE AREAS, HE CHANGED OCCUPATIONS AND IN C. 1898, PURCHASED THE WISCONSIN HOUSE (NO LONGER STANDING) IN DODGEVILLE. HE SOLD THAT PORPERTY IN THREE YEARS AND OPENED A RESTAURANT IN THE GRAND HOTEL (NO LONGER STANDING), A BUILDING ON THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF S. IOWA AND CHAPEL STREETS, WHICH HE BOUGHT IN 1905, SOLD IN JANUARY 1908, AND REPURCHASED IN MARCH, 1909. ALSO IN 1909 HE BECAME OWNER OF THE POPULAR HOTEL HIGBEE (102 S. IOWA STREET, 44/3), OPERATING THIS HOSTELRY UNTIL 1916 WHEN HE SOLD IT TO R. C. JESKE. (SEE BIB. REF. B, C).
