NOTES
Additional Information: THIS WELL-MAINTAINED, QUEEN ANNE HOUSE IS DESIGNED WITH AN IRREGULAR-SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A CLAPBOARD EXTERIOR, A WOOD-SHINGLED TRIM AND AN IRREGULARLY-SHAPED, TRUNCATED, HIP ROOF. DISTINGUISHING ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES INCLUDE GABLED BAYS WITH SHINGLES AND GABLE ORNAMENTS; A CIRCULAR CORNER TOWER WITH A CONICAL CAP AND BRACKETS; A BAND OF SHINGLES DELINEATING THE TWO FLOORS; AND A SMALL ENTRANCE PORCH DETAILED WITH TURNED POSTS, BRACKETS AND SPINDLES. BUILT IN 1899, THIS RESIDENCE, KNOWN HISTORICALLY AS THE HUGH JONES HOUSE, IS PRESENTLY IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. (SEE BIB. REF. A). ALSO LOCATED ON THE SITE IS A GARAGE; THERE IS NO INTENSIVE SURVEY DESCRIBING IT, HOWEVER. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: A NATIVE OF NORTH WALES, HUGH JONES SETTLED IN DODGEVILLE IN 1857 AND OBTAINED A JOB AS A CLERK FOR HOSKINS, THOMAS & CO., A MINING AND SMELTING FIRM. IN 1863, JONES LEFT THIS COMPANY AND WITH HIS BROTHER-IN-LAW, ROBERT OWENS, ESTABLISHED THE GENERAL MERCHANDISE FIRM OF JONES & OWENS, WHICH BEGINNING IN 1816, OCCUPIED THE NEWLY CONSTRUCTED BRICK BLOCK AT 146-154 N. IOWA STREET. (SEE BIB. REF. B, C). THE WELL-STOCKED ESTABLISHMENT CARRIED "DRY GOODS, LADIES' AND GENDELEMEN'S FURNISHING GOODS, CLOCKS, COLTHING, CARPETS, OIL CLOTHS, RUGS, BOOTS, SHOES, HATS, CAPS, STAPLE AND FANCY GROCERIES, ETC." (SEE BIB. REF. D). IN 1908, THE SUCCESSFUL PARTNERSHIP WAS DISSOLVED WITH JONES PURCHASING THE STOCK OF GOODS AND CONTINUING THE OPERATION UNDER THE NAME JONES MERCANTILE COMPANY. A YEAR LATER JONES SOLD THE BUSINESS TO CLARK & ELLIOT CO. AND RETIRED. (SEE BIB. REF. E). MR. JONES DIED IN 1914.
