NOTES
Additional Information: THIS TWO-STORY HOUSE FEATURES A SQUARE-SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A BRICK EXTERIOR AND A HIP ROOF. SEGMENTALLY-ARCHED OPENINGS ARE REPRESENTED THROUGHOUT; PROMINENT HOOD MOLDS EMBELLISH THESE OPENIGNS. THE EAST-FACING MAIN ENTRANCE IS CLASSICALLY FRAMED BY AN ELABORATE DOOR SURROUND WHICH IS PEDIMENTED AND FLANKED BY PILASTERS. A TRANSOM WINDOW IS LOCATED ON BOTH THE FRONT AND SIDE ENTRANCES. OTHER DISTINGUISHING ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS INCLUDE TWO-OVER-TWO LIGHTS AND CORNICE BOARDS. THE RESIDENCE WAS BUILT IN 1882 (SEE BIB. REF. A), WITH ADDITIONS MADE TO IT SUBSEQUENTLY. KNOWN HISTORICALLY AS THE JOHN MYLROIE HOUSE, IT IS PRESENTLY IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. ACCOMPANYING THE HOUSE IS A GARAGE; THERE IS NO INTENSIVE SURVEY DESCRIBING THIS PARTICULAR STRUCTURE, HOWEVER. ARCHITECTURAL/ENGINEERING SIGNIFICANCE: IN DODGEVILLE, THE JOHN MYLROIE HOUSE, CONSTRUCTED IN 1882, IS A SIGNIFICANT ILLUSTRATION OF ITALIANATE ARCHITECTURE. NEARLY SQUARE IN PLAN, THIS BRICK DWELLING -- WITH ITS LOW HIP ROOF, SEGMENTAL ARCH OPENINGS, AND CLASSICALLY FRAMED ENTRANCE -- IS NOT A "TEXTBOOK EXAMPLE" OF THE NINETEETH CENTURY STYLE, BUT RATHER A SIMPLIFIED VERSION THAT IS DISTINGUISHED BY THE QUALITY OF ITS CONSTRUCTION AND ITS STATE OF PRESERVATION. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: IN 1881, JOHN MYLROIE AND HIS BROTHER WILLIAM, OPENED A BRICKYARD ON W. NROTH STREET. IN THE NEXT YEAR, JOHN BEGAN CONSTRUCTION OF THIS DWELLING REPORTED TO MEASURE 29 x 33 FEET. THE RESIDENCE WAS LOCATED JUST WEST OF THE BRICKYARD AND CONSTRUCTED BY MYLROIE BRICKS. (SEE BIB. REF. A, B).
