NOTES
Additional Information:Built in 1860, this two-story Commercial Vernacular styled retail building features a rectangular shaped plan configuration and a flat roof. The brick exterior is covered by a veneer of limestone. Stone lintels and projecting sills frame the one-over-one windows on the second story. Distinguishing the storefront are cast iron columns manufactured by the K & W Co., of Madison, Wisconsin. This structure, known historically as the Smith Brothers Building, is in excellent condition. Architectural/Engineering Significance: Constructed during the Civil War era, the Hocking Market (a modern name for the Smith Brothers Building) is a locally significant example of the commercial vernacular form of architecture. The two-story brick block features a coursed ashlar facade -- the limestone block cut and laid by skilled cornish masons -- which contributes to the community's architectural distinction. Historical Background: The Sanborn maps available for the City of Dodgevile show this structure housing a dry goods establishment. (See Bib. Ref. B).
Bibliographic References:A. Date of Construction was estimated - at one point - as being c. 1865, ascertained by an interview with Gerald Fieldhouse, local historian, Dodgeville, Wisconisn, 14 December 1984. (Note: The name Hocking Market refers to the building's twentieth century occupants. Additional research is necessary to pinpoint original owner, use, and date of construction).
