NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the State Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. Originally well designed, this vernacular commercial building has undergone modifications that have lessened its architectural interest.

2013:
The Post Office Block, constructed in 1898, is a two-part commercial building with Italianate details. The parapet features a central triangular pediment and decorative brackets and rosettes. Inscribed on the cornice and pediment is “Post Office Block, 1898, C. E. Scott.” The main (east) facade is one bay wide and faced with red brick. The original storefront configuration with bulkheads, display windows, transoms, and recessed entry is largely intact. The second-story windows have been boarded, but the openings retain their decorative stone hoods and sills.

The Post Office Block was constructed by Christopher E. Scott, who was one of the first settlers of Whitehall (1). He established a general store in the 1870s near where the current Post Office Block is located. In 1889 Scott was appointed postmaster of Whitehall and in 1898 he constructed the Post Office Block, which was used as both the post office and general store (2).
