Architectural Statement of Significance:
This house has retained its integrity. It is distinctive in form and use of materials in this city.

Historical Background:
Sanborn Maps show this house was here between 1892-1898 (A). August Siefert, who lived here in 1899 (B) had another home for sale or rent in May, 1890 (C). He may have built this house then. The current owner says that the abstract shows a loan taken out around "1880-1890". Siefert lived here until at least 1905 (G).

Siefert was born in Hessen, Germany in 1855 and came to the U.S. (Milwaukee) in 1873. He came to Reedsburg in 1874 and was hired by Hansen, Gale and Co., a hardware store (I). August Siefert Hardware Company was incorporated in 1905, although established in 1870 (as Hansen, Gale & Co.)(D). Prior to 1885 the firm, then called Gale, Siefert & Co., was on the south side of Main Street. At this point it moved to the J.L. Green block across the street (SK8/26, 275 Main Street). In 1890 the firm was Siefert, Blank & Co. and they dealt in hardware, agricultural implements, tools and livestock and were at the same address (E). In 1894 it was called Siefert Brothers (August and Ernest) and still in the J.L. Green block (F).
