ORIENTED ON A NORTHEAST/SOUTHWEST AXIS, THE MILL STREET BRIDGE IS A SINGLE LEAF BASCULE BRIDGE THAT SPANS THE CANAL AT THE LITTLE CHUTE GUARD LOCK. IT RESTS ON CONCRETE ABUTMENTS AND IS ANCHORED ON THE SOUTHWEST CANAL EMBANKMENT. A WOODEN DECK IS CARRIED BY "I" BEAM STRINGERS. THE SOUTHERN RAILING IS SOMEWHAT DECORATIVE. BUILT AROUND A "PIPE LIKE" FRAME, EACH OF THE THREE LONG PANELS CONTAINS DECORATIVE IRONWORK. THE NORTH RAILING, HOWEVER, IS SOLID STEEL -- MADE OUT OF THE SAME TYPE OF MATERIAL USED FOR GIRDER/RAILROAD BRIDGES.

THE MOST UNIQUE FEATURE ON THIS STRUCTURE IS THE COUNTERWEIGHT THAT SETS ATOP A TOWER WHICH RISES FROM THE SOUTHWEST END OF THE BRIGE. THE TOWER APPEARS TO BE GENERALLY FABRICATED FROM CHANNELS CONNECTED WITH ANGLES ARRANGED IN LATTICE WORK FASHION. THE COUNTERWEIGHT ITSELF IS POURED CONCRETE.

ANOTHER RELATED BUILDING IS THE GUARD LOCK.
