Additional Information: | THIS ONE-STORY, SIDE GABLED HOUSE FEATURES A RECTANGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A STONE FOUNDAITON, A STONE EXTERIOR AND AN ASPHALT SHINGLED, GABLE ROOF. A LARGE, MODERN ADDITION WITH A CONCRETE BLOCK FOUNDATION WAS CONSTRUCTED AT THE REAR. THIS ADDITION CHANGES THE SHAPE OF THE ORIGINAL RECTANGULAR PLAN. EAVE RETURNS APPEAR IN THE OPEN GABLE ENDS ON THE OLDER, STONE PORTION; A TRANSOM WINDOW EMBELLISHES ITS FRONT DOOR. THIS RESIDENCE, CONSTRUCTED IN C. 1845 (SEE BIB. REF. F), Abiel Chandler's Side Gable House was built in the mid-1840's. The Cornish miners were skilled stone cutters and this home features their talent with solid 18 inch thick walls using coursed ashlar limestone from the area hillsides. The original cottage is 29'x17' being, two-rooms wide and one room deep. The exterior has stone lintels, sills and quions, with one brick end chimney. The gable ends are built with short cornice returns. The central located door is flanked by six-over six windows, typical of a miners cottage of that time. The interior retains the beautiful wide pine floor boards that have developed to a warm pumpkin color glow over the passage of time. The planks are variously placed and range in size from 8 inch in width to 16 inches in width. A rare off-center large stone fireplace end caps the main room of the home. An interior natural uncut stone wall of various shapes and sizes is laid with thick mortar in an uncorked pattern, will catch your eye as you enter inside. This natural uncut stone continues to the other side of this wall as you step on the threshold that was once the backdoor, now an interior passage. This is a two level home where one family could live upstairs and one family could live downstairs. The stone work was also opened up to its natural beauty on the lower level. On the grounds is a root cellar. From the front door you can see two trees which between lye a stone path that decades ago was placed and lost over time, this is one of the many recent discoveries that have been unearthed and uncovered to reveal it's original beauty. |
