Additional Information: | The interior of this building was gutted in September of 1986. The plaque on the building indicates that this building was "the historic Old Stone House, used as an inn on the Madison-Milwaukee [stagecoach] route." Consequently, the structure is one of the oldest, extant examples in the village. In 1898, an insurance record identified the building as the N. Hanson residence. This individual was likely Nels Hanson, who owned a shoemaking shop at present-day 150 W Main Street. Sandborn maps from 1909 and 1932 denote the building served as a dwelling; a local resident remembers it retained this function into the 1950s. During the late 1960s, the Cambridge Foundation purchased the building to preserve the village's heritage. In 1974, the Voyagers Jewelry Store opened a shop on the premises. |
