Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Photo code #2: 74FD-32/25,26. This two story stone house has details from both the Greek Revival and Italianate styles. It has a hip roof with overhanging eaves and a wooden frieze. The walls are constructed of regularly coursed limestone. Openings are six over six light double hung sashes with smooth stone lintels and sills. The main entrance features a transom and sidelights and is covered with a small porch supported by thin Italianate style posts. A one and one half story ell projects from the rear wall of the house and a one story ell projects from the rear of the larger ell. These ells are constructed and decorated in the same manner as the main block, except for the two story bay on the larger ell that is a later addition. This house is architecturally significant as a fine and outstanding example of a stone constructed house with both Greek Revival and Italianate mannerisms. The form and massing fits the Italianate style, but the symmetrical plan and regular fenestration also fits the Greek Revival style. The front Italianate porch adds to the distinctive character of the house. |
