NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. This large three story Classical Revival business and apartment building is constructed of brown bricks and decorated with classical motifs in its stone trim. Above the cornice is a parapet with stone coping and pilasters decorated with shields. Below the cornice is a frieze made up of squares of rosettes. The upper floor windows are single light, double hung sashes with vertical muntins in the upper sash. They are trimmed on the third floor with round and elliptical stone arches decorated with oval cartouches. There are panels with swags and stone belt courses also decorated the upper level of this building. The storefronts all have transoms with multiple lights, large show windows and recessed entries. Some of the transoms have been covered up, but most of the storefronts are relatively intact.

This building is unusual because it is not typical of an early twentieth century commercial block. It is more like an apartment building in apperaance, and in reality, it was built primarily to house apartments. The brown bricks with the elegant stone trim is seen more often in residential areas. Because of its unusual type of construction for a small city downtown, and because of its fine Classical Revival trim, this building is architecturally important. The many almost intact storefronts on the first floor of the building also adds to its significance.

Built in 1925, the building has been used as apartments with stores on the first floor thorughout its history. Stores in the building have included a barber shop, shoe store, jewelry store, restaurant, liquor store, and a variety store.
