Additional Information: | This two-story house has an intersecting gable roof with returned eaves and dentils decorating the frieze. The house is covered with clapboards. Windows are primarily multi-light double-hung sashes decorated with lintels and shutters. There are fluted pilasters at the corners of the house and the sun room that projects from the east wall of the house. The front porch consists of a pedimented overhang and frieze with dentils supported by fluted columns. The main entrance is accented by a lintel with dentils and pilasters. In the front gable peak is a lunette window topping a panel with a carved swag. The house may have been a plain structure given these embellishments in the early twentieth century. This house is architecturally significant as a fine example of classically decorated front gable house. All of the decoration on this house, including the denticulated friezes, the corner pilasters, the fluted columns of the porch, and the sun room are typical of details found on early twentieth century Colonial or Georgian Revival houses. Applied to this nineteenth century building, these details add to its Greek Revival form and massing. This was the home of S.G. Leland, a bookkeeper and court clerk during the years he lived in this house. This house is not historically significant at this time. Further research may uncover information that makes the house significant in the future. In particular, research about S.G. Leland may be significant. |
