Additional Information: | 1982 DESCRIPTION: This massive three-story corner residence is a vernacular interpretation of the Late Picturesque and Shingle styles that consists of a large rectangular plan house with a central hip roof and from this projects the third floor elements giving the house its picturesque quality. The southwest facade features an asymmetrical entry at the corner from which a curved first story wall extends. The two stories, covered with narrow clapboard, are separated by a continuous molding. The second and third stories on this southwest facade are symmetrical and the third story is noteworthy for the projecting gabled roof dormer with a return cornice, a pair of coupled rectangular windows, shingle siding, and an unusual balcony projecting from where the wall and eaves meet. The northwest facade is less distinguished and the projecting gabled two story block has a shingled gable that is marred by a new window. At the angle of these two parts of the house, a wide circular sunporch with a circular roof sweeps out into the yard. Old photographs show that this was once an open porch and that the house has been altered little. SIGNIFICANCE: The house is significant as a local example of a vernacular blend of the Shingle and Late Picturesque styles expressed through the simple surfaces and bold volumetric massing as well as the unusual roofline. The house is a usual landmark noticeable from the major thoroughfares of Chapple Avenue and 6th Street West and as a pivotal structure anchors the north end of the proposed district. 2012: A fire occurred somewhat recently at the home and the porch, which was rounded, was rebuilt as a rectangle. Windows were also previously multiple-light examples. |
