This project reflects the new interest in period restorations of historic buildings that was sparked by the restorations at Williamsburg, Virginia. Dane County Landmark. Accompanying garage was built in 1912. "Constructed of native stone and wood by Squire William Petheridge, and English lawyer and farmer. In 1876 it was acquired by Thomas Isom, and the Isom family owned it for many years. At one time, Isom owned all the land on both sides of University Bay Drive, from the Unitarian Church to Lake Mendota..." [E] 2018 - The two-story Keystone House has an L-plan footprint consisting of the original side-gabled residence and a rear gabled addition. The primary entrance located on the southern façade facing toward University Avenue. The vernacular form of the house has little applied ornamentation or stylized detailing. The original section of the residence is a simple side gabled form with an interior chimney at each end of the building and a central exterior chimney extending out of the north (rear) elevation. The exterior walls of the home are clad in a mixture of local sandstone and clapboard siding. The southern façade houses the central main entrance. A gabled two-story addition extends north from the west side of the north elevation and dates to the late-nineteenth century. The stone forming the walls of the house came from nearby Shorewood Bluffs and measure two to three feet thick. The roof is clad in modern asphalt shingles. In 1943, the home was purchased by Freda Keys Winterble. At the time of the purchase, the house had been divided into multiple living units. Keys, under the supervision of architect Arthur McLeod, undertook an extensive renovation project and restored the house to a single family residence in c. 1946. In 1965, the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation purchased the house. It is currently home to UW Madison's Center for Healthy Minds. |
