This 1884 [A] Commercial Vernacular building with Italianate detailing is located on the north side of Main Street and is similar in proportion and detail to many of the other commercial properties along the street. Three bays wide, it has a shaped, corbelled cornice, shouldered segmental arch lintels with keystones, corner brick pilasters and a round arched entrance. The first story has been significantly altered. Various construction features include a rectangular shaped plan configuration, a brick exterior and trim, and a flat roof. The retail building is in good condition.

Architectural Significance:

Historical Background:

Built in 1884, this building housed the fire station on the first floor and the municipal offices on the second floor. [A, D]. In 1901, the new City Hall replaced this building as both a City Hall and as an engine house. [D]. By 1904 the building was occupied by a store, in 1912 by a meat store, and 1926 by just a store again. [C]. Dungey and Horn, probably grocers, were located at this site in 1915. [B, E].

Historical Significance:

This property is significant under Criterion A as an example of the local government element of the government Theme and the Goods and Services element of the Commerce Theme for Stoughton. It is a contributing resource in the Main Street Historic District.
