Additional Information:1996--Two story, brick Italianate house on a coursed, cut stone foundation and with a hip roof, paired bracketed eaves, rear porch with carved wooden supports, polygonal bay with hip roof, flat roof front porch with fluted columns; windows are largely modern. Clapboard garage is adjacent.

BEST EXAMPLE OF THE STYLE IN THE CITY. VAN OSTRAND BEGAN IN RIVER FREIGHT THEN HARDWARE, FLOUR, PAPER, STOVES, AND BANKING. WAS A FOUNDER OF THE MANUFACTURER'S NATIONAL BANK AND A LIFELONG PARTNER AND FRIEND OF HIRAM SMITH.

The house was previously surveyed in 1996(SHSW/95-1673) with a map code of 120/s on a City Base Map. The 2004 map code is 155/29a.
