Additional Information: | DESCRIPTION: This large 2 1/2 story house of a rectangular plan features a shingled front end gable with a pair of small rectangular windows from which on the southeast side a gabled two-story bay window with cut-away corners projects with decorative scroll brackets are intact. Like others of its type, the first and second floors are covered with narrow clapboards with a continuous wood course to articulate the two stories. Original rectangular windows are intact and the most notable are those on the front entry sunporch with a neoclassical-style fanlight over the door. Note the Eastlake-style bargeboard brownstone foundation, and a rear addition. SIGNIFICANCE: This house is considered architecturally significant for its pivotal role in the proposed Ellis Avenue district as a well-preserved example of Late Picturesque architecture found on the prominent avenues of Ashland. The narrow clapboard and wood shingles were probably purchased from one of Ashland's lakefront lumber mills and the brownstone foundation was certainly made from locally quarried materials. |
