NOTES
Additional Information:A large three story Late picturesque style vernacular house which incorporates certain features of the Shingle style. The house rests upon a brownstone foundation and is surrounded by much of its early landscaping. The first floor is clapboarded and features a central entry through the veranda, the shed roof of which is supported by coupled and tripled columns on pedistals. Note the side bay window on northwest wall. The second floor is shingled in a contrasting darker color and features a front hexagonal bay window that extends below on veranda and upwards into the tall and narrow off-center front gable with a bargeboard. This gable type is placed at the same corner on the northwest wall, giving roofline a highly picturesque quality. A small roof dormer protrudes from roof over front southeast side. All original windows are in place; note small rectangular windows in the gables.

SIGNIFICANCE: the house is architecturally significant for its pivotal role in the proposed wllis Avenue district as a unique example of Late Picturesque/Shingle Style residential architecture, the character of which is unmatched in Ashland. Located in the center of the district, the house stands out from its neighbors while providing an essential stylistic link of integrity to other contributing structures nearby and diminishing the presence of neighboring non-contributing buildings.
