Additional Information: | 1982: DESCRIPTION: This small 1 1/2 story clapboard residence rests on a raised foundation of cast rusticated cement blocks. The first floor features narrow clapboard and a variety of original sash windows. The rectangular planned house has a gabled roof with shingles and a pair of rectangular windows in the gables. A gabled sunporch with asymmetrical entry extends from the front which has its original windows and a Bungaloid character. A shed roof bay window extends form the southeast wall. SIGNIFICANCE: This bungalow residence is architecturally significant as a pivotal property in the proposed ellis Avenue district as the latest example of a bungalow in the district, dating to 1922. Its fine detailing and state of preservation add to its distinctive character. It compares well with earlier houses in the district in scale and materials and provides an excellent temporal endpoint for the district's period of significance, thus terminating a recognizable stylistic development along Ellis Avenue within the district. It is surely the best 1920's bungalow in Ashland, and relates well to the district's other pivotal bungalows from the mid-teens. See (20-5) and (20-6). |
