2014:
Greenwood’s State Bank was built in 1921. This two-story Neo-Classical building is clad in cut-stone and has a flat roof with parapet and open balustrade. The front (east) facade is symmetrical and features an entablature with an overhanging cornice and dentil coursing, a frieze engraved with the words “Greenwood’s State Bank” and decorative scrollwork, and a simple architrave supported by fluted Corinthian columns. The entablature shelters the main entryway, which is centered on the front facade and flanked by single-pane plate glass windows with sidelights. The entryway and windows feature classical surrounds with an open pediment with dentil coursing, decorative floral details, and Corinthian pilasters. A plaque reading “Greenwood’s State Bank Established 1883” is located next to the entrance. Windows on the second floor are fixed single-pane.

Historically, the first floor contained the teller’s stations, offices, and vault, while the second floor was occupied by Greenwood Law and Insurance Agency offices. The interior was remodeled in the late 1960s. The original two-story ceiling was dropped to one-story, administrative offices were enclosed, and teller stations were relocated. In 1976 the bank acquired the adjacent building to the south, c.115 North Main Street (AHI# 6959), and incorporated it into the drive-thru by removing a majority of the first-story. In 1979 the bank acquired the adjacent building to the north (123 North Main Street). The wall on the first floor between the two buildings was removed to create office space. Based on the June 2014 site visit, no additional changes have been made to the first floor interior. The second floor of the building retains what appears to be the original office space and is currently used for storage.

This is the second Greenwood’s State Bank in Lake Mills. The original bank is located at 107 North Main Street (AHI# 6957).
