Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. This one-story, Spanish Colonial-style public library, designed by Madison architects Claude and Starck, was constructed c.1927. The original main block of the building is of hollow clay tile construction, covered in stucco, with a rectangular plan on a concrete foundation. The front-gable roof is covered with asphalt shingles and features a main gable with a projecting gable to the left of the front (northwest) facade that includes the entryway. A trio of 12-over-12, double-hung sash windows with twisted column mullions and fanlights is located within the primary gable portion. The entryway’s wooden nine-pane front door is also flanked by twisted columns and sidelights; it also has a fanlight. A trio of four-over-four, single-hung, raised basement windows fall below a small concrete balconette with a wrought-iron balustrade. Two pairs of wrought-iron brackets support the balconette. Concrete steps with three wrought-iron handrails lead up to the entryway. A wooden sign sits in the grassy front lawn. The building features a rear (southeast) addition built in the 1980s of rock-faced, concrete block construction, with a rectangular plan and a flat roof. It has no windows. A paved accessibility ramp leads to a modern accessible entrance. The interior of the historic portion of the building still functions as a public library. The main room has original wood trim, molding, and doors. The foyer walls are of stucco with terra cotta tile flooring. It contains an original wooden staircase with brass handrails. |
