Additional Information: | Two story enclosed porch with arched double doors and wooden second story porch in angle of house; fan shaped windows in gable peaks above hip roof formations; bracketed shed roofed front porch added to structure; south bay window with cresting. This building, constructed in 1883, was the second rectory for the St. Bernard's Catholic Church next door. It has been a rectory ever since. 1999- This rectory was built on the site of an earlier parsonage building. In October 1883, the old building was sold to Fred Bertram for $210; Bertram then moved the building to Washington Street. Soon work began on the new building. On 30 April 1884, the Republican reported, "St. Bernard's Church parsonage moves forward rapidly to completion. The building will be one of the handsomest in the city." The rectory is an example of the Queen Ann style, displaying the shingle work and varied roofline associated with the style. The building was enlarged in the Spring on 1893 when Father Condon "had the parlor of the parsonage enlarged by adding a bay window." The building has been converted to a convent. |
