NOTES
Additional Information:Tall two story front end gable vernacular clapboard house with early windows, small entry portico and rear one-story sunporch with entry.

2008-This house has not changed in appearance since last surveyed in 2000. Based on a variety of sources, this property is believed to have been the site of the home and business of one of Asland's founding fathers--Martin Beaser. Beaser resided in Ashland from circa 1854 to his death in 1866. While the property itself was retained by Laura Beaser Wilson until her death, it is believed that the house was built in 1883 by her son Harry. By 1893, the home was sold to John w. Murray, the superintendent of the Shores Lumber Co. he remained here until 1896, after which the house was sold to Frank J. Hahn Sr., the president of the Chequamegon Ice Company.

2008- "This two-and-one-half-story, front-gabled house is covered with clapboard siding and rises from a stone foundation. A
one-and-one-half-story wing extends from the rear (to the southeast). The primary Lake Shore Drive (northwest)
elevation carries a single door to the left (east) of a circa 1950s, tripartite picture window. Sheltering the doorway is
a flat-roofed porch overhang with wooden column supports that rests upon a replacement porch base. A series of three,
one-over-one-light, double-hung sashes occupy the second floor. Somewhat regularly placed sash windows are located
throughout the two-story block, while the enclosed rear porch is comprised of a continuous band of what appear to be
circa-1920s windows.

A historical account from 1930 cites that "Beaser conducted a trading post in a small store located on the corner of
Beaser Avenue and Front Street on the property now occupied by the residence of Frank Hahn, Sr." If this reference
is correct, then this is the parcel upon which Beaser had his business. Indeed, tax rolls support that this parcel was
owned by Laura A. Beaser, Martin's widow, both before and after his death. While tax rolls also support that a structure
has long been located upon this parcel, it appears that the subject structure was built in 1883. An 1883 reference in
the local newspaper cites that Harry Beaser built "a cottage" at the corner of Main & Front streets, at a cost of $1,500.
By 1893, the home was sold to John W. Murray, the superintendent of the Shores Lumber Co. He remained here until
1896, after which the home was owned and occupied by Frank J. Hahn, the president of the Chequamegon Ice
Company. Hahn remained here until at least 1935; however, by 1937-38, Carl L. Larson, a salesman at the Wallie Motor
Co. (located on Main Street West in Ashland), is identified as the home's occupant (but not owner)."
