Additional Information: | George Gilles was an occupant of this house around 1900. He was a civil engineer. Benjamin Krueger occupied this house around 1919. Initial research indicates that none of the occupants of this house are historically significant. Built in the late 19th century, this cream brick gabled house features a gable square entrance tower characterized by a triple arched second story window (similar to the house at 721 No. 4th (28-21) and double leafed entrance door with arched overlight covered by an open one-bay porch with curved posts placed on paneled bases. Projecting arched wooden window heads with pendent ends on the facade and on the three-sided west bay window as well as segmental arched wooden peaks on the side elevations also characterize this house. Although the George Gilles house has retained a fair degree of integrity as an example of the Italianate style, this house is not one of the better examples of the Italianate influence in the city. More significant examples of the style are the Cole house at 802 N. 4th (28/22), the Hartwig house at 903 County Lane (27/32), the Prentiss house at 802 Clyman (43/26) and the Hill house at 700 Clyman (43/25). |
