Description of Kettle Moraine State Forest-Southern Unit:
"The four units of the Kettle Moraine State Forest include the Northern Unit, Lowe's Lake Unit, Lapham Peak Unit, and Southern Unit. The Southern Unit is the second largest unit covering an area of about 19,000 acres stretching through the three counties of Waukesha, Jefferson, and Walworth." (See Bib. Ref. A).
"The Kettle Moraine State Forest was established in 1936 by an act of state legislature and is operated by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources-Bureau of Parks." (See Bib. Ref. A).
Throughout its history, the Kettle Moraine was managed as a multiple-use forest. In the beginning, forest management was emphasized with large tracts of land planted to pine seedlings. Today outdoor recreation is its major use and many different types of recreational facilities have been constructed including a rifle range, cross-country ski trails, nature trails, campgrounds, picnic sites, horse trails, Visitor Center, beach areas, etc. (See Bib. Ref. C).
Today, efforts are being made to correct some of the damage done to the natural resources over the years including reintroducing wildlife that once existed there. From a very modest beginning, the Kettle Moraine today (including both Units) has grown to cover approximately 45,000 acres and greets over 2 million visitors annually. (See Bib. Ref. C). |
