Additional Information: | DESCRIPTION: Located just outside the northwest boundary of the proposed Chapple Avenue district. This large and extremely well-preserved two story Late Picturesque style house consists of a hipped roof central block from which the many differently scaled parts project, including the tall corbelled brick chimney. The board asymmetrical front facade features central gabled projecting wall dormer that is decorated shingles above the pair of rectangular windows. To the NW a small pediment stands out above rectangular windows below and to the SE a shed roof room is supported by the prominent flat roof veranda that wraps around the front of the house and featurtes coupled columns upon pedestals and a continuous short wall. Toward the rear of the house, a two story extension features a small diamond-shaped window and rectangular windows. The major shingled decorative panels, the window moldings, the column supports and articulating corner boards are painted in a bold color in strong contrast with the white painted clapboards. SIGNIFICANCE: This house is significant as one of the best preserved 1890s Late Picturesque style residences of this particular type in Ashland. |
