Additional Information: | 2002 - This one-story, largely flat-roof, commercial building carries elements of the Mediterranean Revival style and consists of numerous blocks. It is clad in a latex-like stucco. The main block is situated in the northwest corner with the main entrance located on the west facade. An enclosed, gabled, entry porch topped with a metal tile roof carries a round-arch entrance. The parapet consists of pier-like corners connected by pents covered with metal tile and underscored with carved wooden brackets. Fenestration within this block generally consists of six-over-six, double-hung sashes underlined with wooden sills. Meanwhile, a gabled wing projects from the rear (south) while a flat-roof block is fitted to the east facade. A larger, flat-roof addition is attached to the preceding flat-roof block. The two eastern additions are of recent construction and their most significant architectural detail in the stucco coating and simple board trim. Sanborn maps indicate that the main block and the gabled (south) wing of this structure were constructed between 1919 and 1929. It was the office of the Ott Coal Company, which opened a coal yard adjacent to the Chicago & North Western Railroad tracks during the 1920s. According to a 1945 Sanborn, the coal yard consisted of several coal bins and a coal elevator (all were razed sometime after 1987). The eastern additions were constructed after 1945. In the 1980s, the building was part of the West Bend Monument Company. It is currently vacant. |
