Additional Information: | DESCRIPTION 2022 - The property consists of two residences that are historically associated with each and were originally constructed on the same lot as the front house and the alley house. The front house, 1572 S. 4th Street (97759), is one-and-a-half story, front-gabled single-family house constructed circa 1900 . It stands at the front of the lot at the northeast corner of S. 4th Street and W. Lapham Boulevard with the principal elevation facing west toward W. Lapham Boulevard. It is roughly rectangular in plan with a narrower rear-gabled volume extending from the east (rear) elevation. The house stands on a partially raised cream brick basement. The original siding has been covered or replaced with asphalt siding. The roof is covered in asphalt composition shingle with closed eaves clad in vinyl soffit and fascia. A concrete block chimney rises from the ridge of the rear-gabled volume. The main entrance in the west elevation is below a partial width raised porch that features a hipped roof supported on tapered wood columns atop brick piers. The windows in first story of the main volume are place in banks of four and three. The windows are placed individually in the upper half-story, the basement, and the rear-gabled volume. Most of the original three-over-one hung wood sash windows have been replaced with one-over-one hung vinyl sash windows. A smaller house is located at the rear of the property (97758). HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The front and rear house on a single, narrow lot is described in Built in Milwaukee as a housing type that is a “survival of immigrant culture in Milwaukee” (Landscape Research 1983). These houses may be associated with immigrant settlement in Milwaukee between ca. 1880 and 1910 as this was a common housing type among Polish and German immigrants in working class neighborhoods. |
