Additional Information: | The Atkinson-Nash Auto Sales and Service building was erected in 1922. This building housed a garage and automotive sales and service business at least until 1931. This automotive dealership changed ownership by 1926, when it became known as the Art Wendorff-Nash Garage. It stayed the Wendorff Nash Company until at least 1930 and perhaps even longer. The Atkinson-Nash Auto Sales and Service possesses potential historical significance as an important automotive business type in the community. However, because so very little is known about other automotive business types in the community to compare the Atkinson-Nash Auto Sales and Service with, it lacks significance under criterion A of the National Register of Historic Places. built of brick and hallow tile on concrete foundation, this one story building slopes from a one-and-a-half story facade to a one-story rear elevation. This building features vertical wooden siding on the upper facade and a double storefront with metal and glass windows and doors. Plain rectangular window and door openings are located on the brick elevations on the east and west sides of the buildings. This large former automobile showroom and garage has been altered by the addition of wood siding to the facade and by the addition of contemporary storefronts. In addition, the interior space and storefront has been remodeled, changing the single commercial space into two stores. This vernacular building was constructed in 1922 by masonry contractor, J.N. Summerfield, using fireproof construction. Built for Howard Atkinson, this large one-story building originally housed the Atkinson Nash Auto Sales and Service Company. The Atkinson Nash Sales and Service does not meet the criteria of the NRHP for architectural significance because of a lack of integrity. However, this building has sufficient architectural character to contribute to the proposed Water Street Commercial Historic District. |
