Additional Information: | Sanborn-Perris maps show that this two-story limestone-clad Italianate style building was constructed between 1892 and 1900 (other sources say ca.1896) as a portion of a larger stone livery barn/carriage barn that was long associated with the nearby Hotel Fortney. This building was used as the sample room of the hotel until at least 1922 but in 1933 its first story was occupied by a vulcanizing business and its second story by a printing business. 1995- "Sanborn maps show that this Italianate style-influenced Commercial Vernacular form two-story rectilinear plan building was constructed as a portion of a larger stone livery barn/carriage barn that was built ca. 1896 and for many years afterwards it served as the sample room of the nearby Fortney Hotel (102-104 N. Main St.). The building measures 65-feet-deep x 20-teet-wide and it has a cut stone foundation and two-toot-thick rock-faced ashlar limestone exterior walls. The main facade faces south onto Court Street. No historic photos of this two-bay-wide tacade have been found, but it appears to be largely intact with the exception of the smaller modern window that now fills its first story display window opening and the single-light modern windows that fill its two segmentalarched second story window openings. The east-facing side elevation ot this building is also clad in stone. Much of it is now hidden by a covered exterior staircase that is of modern construction, but Sanborn maps show that a staircase of similar size has always covered most ot this elevation. Sanborn maps also show that this building was occupied by the sample room of the hotel until at least 1922, but in 1933 its first story was occupied by a vulcanizing business and its second story by a printing shop. The largely intact state ot this building makes it a contributing resource in the district and it was surveyed by the SHPO in 1990." - "USH 14 Transportation Study ", WisDOT ID #1646-07-00, Prepared by Timothy F Heggland (1995). |
