"The congregation was founded in 1855 in the log cabin school in Lower Big Creek in the town of Burns. The minister was John Houston. A Sunday School was organized in 1856. The Burns congregation came to Bangor and united with the Welsh Baptist. It was the first English speaking church in the area.

Construction was started in 1860, and by donated labor and money the church was completed in 1864 and dedicated from of debt. It stood on the present site, had a belfry in the center, and two entrances. No baptistery was done in the church. For baptizing members were immersed in open water other summer and winter in the Dutch Creek. One of the first services held was because of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.
