It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation-Public History The Cole Brothers house was originally built with lumber from the Stedman sawmill. It was completely shingled over at an unknown date. The building was originally a side-gabled Greek Revival, but a projecting front gable was added, creating an L-plan. The original entrance in the ell is now sheltered by an arched porch. The foundation consists of plastered-over field stone. A front addition was constructed in 1926 to house a barber shop. Charles Cole moved to Sheboygan Falls in 1838, where Silas Stedman was running a sawmill. In 1842, Cole's brothers moved into the area and they built their house in 1846. Cole was appointed postmaster of Sheboygan Falls in 1840 and owned a general store next to his brother' home. His wife Sarah was the city's first school teacher, which she ran from their family home next to the general store. Cole also secured the first Temperance League in the midwest, which he directed from the second story of the general store.
