NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. This two-story Second Empire house has a very high raised limestone foundation, a mansard roof with round-arched dormers, clapboard siding, wide eaves with brackets and later-added porches. The dormers are filled with sets of round-arched openings, while other windows of the house are largely single light sashes. A later added veranda wraps around one side of the house. It has round columns and a spool and spindle balustrade. A stickwork porch covers another entrance to the house. It features a double door with fancy stickwork detail that is decorated with a transom, and covered with a jerkinhead-roofed overhang decorated with a stickwork frieze and supported by turned columns. This house is architecturally significant for the National Register as a good example of the Second Empire style. The mansard roof with fine dormers, along with the Italianate-era details are all typical of the Second Empire style in Wisconsin. But, this house has an unusual raised foundation and the stickwork porch that make it distinctive in the city. Albert Blankenburg, a furniture store owner, lived here between 1884 and 1887. Harry Baker, a nurseryman, lived here between at least 1903 and 1934. While this house has some interest as the home of two local businessmen, it is not historically significant at this time.
