Downtown Plymouth Historic District Generally bounded by the 100, 200, 300 and 400 blocks of E. Mill Street City of Plymouth, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin Period of Significance: 1858-1962
Downtown Plymouth, centered on E. Mill Street, has been the historic commercial core of the community for over 160 years. The prevalence and variety of stores: hardware, dry goods and groceries, pharmacy, farm supplies, furniture, and shoes to name some, reflects that this was the center of commerce. Joined in the mix were a Post Office, theater, doctors’ offices, an automobile service garage, hotel, bank, and professional offices which provided additional services or amenities to the community. The buildings reflect the architectural styles that were popular between the late nineteenth and mid twentieth centuries and include the Italianate, German Renaissance Revival, Classical Revival, 20th Century Commercial and Contemporary styles, as well as vernacular Front Gabled and Commercial Vernacular forms. The Downtown Plymouth Historic District with its various restaurants, shops and amenities, is a thriving commercial district which continues to be an important part of the community. |
