| Additional Information: | Initially surveyed in 2002. Limestone accentuates the building's belt courses, surrounds, sills, lintels, water table, and patterned wall panels. Front entrance surmounted by a classically-embellished, semicircular-arch hood. Washington was erected to relieve overcrowded conditions at Sheboygan's Eighth Ward School and Horace Mann Elementary School. Land for the school was purchased from Max Kroos and August Herman for $5,500. H.C. Koch & Sons designed the fireproof school with classrooms, an office, library, and two larger reception rooms, at a cost of $44,000. Rudolf Jahn of Sheboygan headed the construction. A 1926 addition added a gymnasium and more classrooms. The school intially housed students through eighth grade, but with the dedication of Urban Middle School in 1961, it became solely an elementary school. In the late 1970s remodeling was performed to improve energy efficiency. In 2000, a $1.2 million renovation and expansion occurred at the school, and included a new library, computer lab, more classrooms, an elevator, an expanded cafeteria, and staff lounge space. |
