Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property named 'Paine Lumber Company Historic District'. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. BUILT TO HOUSE FACTORY WORKERS. THE ROW HOUES WERE CONSTRUCTED OF CONCRETE BLOCK WITH STUCCO FINISH. THE DESIGN IS SIMPLE WITH GABLE ENDS AND PORCHES CONTAINING EXPOSED BEAM ENDS AND SOME HALF TIMBERING. EACH BLOCK OF BUILDINGS ACCOMMODATES SIX FAMILIES. FOUR GABLES AND THREE PORCHES BREAK UP THE FACADE OF EACH BLOCK. THIS COMPLEX WAS ENVISIONED AS A MODEL COMMUNITY FOR FACTORY WORKERS. THIS PARTICULAR DESIGN WAS NOT REPRODUCED IN THE CITY, ALTHOUGH DETACHED WORKER'S COTTAGES APPEAR ON SEVENTH AVE. (WN 27/8) THE ROW HOUSES WERE CONSTRUCTED BY THE PAINE LUMBER COMPANY, OSTENSIBLY AS MODEL FACTORY HOUSING; THEY REPLACE OLDER PAINE HOUSING BUILT AS APARTMENTS IN THE 1890'S (B) THE ROW HOUSES REPRESENT A RARE EXAMPLE OF INDUSTRIAL PATERNALISM IN OSHKOSH. IN 1898, PAINE APARTMENTS WERE PROVIDED FOR THE LOYAL NON-STRIKERS. (C). |
