The ARC is a cooperative project of the University and the Wisconsin Historical Society to preserve historical records in Burnett, Polk, St. Croix, and Pierce counties.
Genealogists, local-history writers, university students, faculty, secondary school groups, and other researchers are encouraged to use the Center.
Holdings
More than 900 cubic feet of local government public records including tax rolls, county board proceedings, school district records, court records, and township records from the 1850s to the 1970s.
The Center also holds more than 400 cubic feet of papers and records produced by private organizations and individuals. Included are church and cemetery records; family papers; business records; and numerous collections of unpublished letters, diaries, regional histories, and genealogies.
The Center is also the repository for the University of Wisconsin-River Falls' archives.
Finding Aids
Holdings are described in a printed guide. More detailed research tools include pathfinders, registers and inventories, and a card catalog listing of all holdings. The Center's oral history collection is indexed in a guide, Voices From the St. Croix Valley. The Center also has published guides to the holdings of the Wisconsin Historical Society.
Other Research Resources
In addition to archives and manuscript collections, ARC holdings include: an extensive regional newspaper collection with an index to naturalization, birth, death, and marriage notices; federal and state census population schedules for Wisconsin and Minnesota, 1836-1910 (Wisconsin complete); Wisconsin census indexes 1836, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1880 and 1900; photographic prints and negatives; more than 150 oral history interviews; and an extensive collection of maps, books, ephemera and other printed sources.
