William Francis Allen
Quarter-length carte-de-visite portrait of William Francis Allen, professor of ancient languages and history at UW-Madison. Dr. Allen had taught newly emancipated slaves in South Carolina during the Civil War, before becoming a professor of classics, first at Antioch College and then at the University of Wisconsin. He was an editor of the 1867 book Slave Songs of the United States, the first book compiling slave songs as literature. |
