Lumber Railroad Crew
A work crew of the Upham Lumber and Manufacturing Company near Athens, Wisconsin. The men are riding on a flatbed car of the Abbottsford and Northeastern Railroad, a subsidiary of the Wisconsin Central Railway, for whom they will be constructing a new logging spur. The engine, (No #1000) was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and originally identified as No #28 of the Wisconsin Central Railway. The engine was sold to Upham in 1898 and then sold by Upham to the United States Leather Company in 1908 for use in the Rib Lake area. The draw bar attachments to flat car No 581 were patented by Williamson and Price in 1897. Railroad historian Roy L. Martin, from whose collection this image comes, noted the typical corduroy roadway and makeshift log bridge. |
