Painting
James Duane Doty
Portrait of Wisconsin territorial Governor James Duane Doty. Land speculator and judge, Doty engineered the selection of Madison as the permanent capital in 1836. The legislature placed him and two others in charge of erecting public buildings in Madison. Doty's plan placed the capitol on a hill at the center of the isthmus. The capitol has remained on that site ever since. |
