A Sunday on the High Seas during my Crossing to America
The main deck of The Tuisco, showing groups of immigrant men, women, and a child in brightly colored clothing, conversing while standing below a full sail. Hölzlhuber depicted an immigrant ship as a "swimming town on the ocean, and where one can find more entertainment than in some big cities where one sometimes does not know his closest neighbor." Events like weddings and births provided excitement. Talk was dominated by stories of life back home, and the reasons for leaving it behind. Passengers also killed time watching whales, sharks, and other sea life, or playing cards, dominoes, or Lotto. Taken from Hölzlhuber's description of the scene, translated by Vera Kroner. |
