Carl Klaner's Farm near Woodstock in Canada
Mr. Klaner, who had just come from Elberfeld to Canada in 1858, purchased this farm and worked it with his wife and children. Initially they were plagued by numerous rattlesnakes nesting under felled trees and stumps. Pigs, however, would hunt, kill, and eat them. Though fatal to humans and other livestock, the rattlesnake's bite was apparently not injurious to pigs. Thus on many farms Hölzlhuber found pigs running free. Taken from Hölzlhuber's description of the scene, translated by Vera Kroner. |
