St. Nazianz Church
Church, probably named St. Nazianz, at least unofficially; no source is quite clear on this. In 1845, Father Ambrose Oschwald, hoping to free his co-religionists from governmental interference and to build a communal society based on those of early Christianity, led 113 people from Baden, Germany, purchased 3,840 acres of land in Wisconsin and settled his community at this site. By 1855 they had built this church, four log houses, a large shed, blacksmith shop, smokehouse, barn; they had 20 head of cattle. The community fell apart after the death of Father Oschwald in 1873. |
