Due to the original Science Hall building's fiery demise, the University's Regents wanted the new Science Hall to be fireproof. It was one of the first buildings in the country to use significant numbers of steel I-beams in its construction. Completed in 1887, this late 19th century Romanesque structure was, according to the definitive history of the University, "...generally regarded as the best building of its kind in the whole country." Science Hall entered into the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. |
