The original mill on the site, called Martin mill, was built in the 1840's, probably by someone named Martin. In 1851 a Dr. Schofield (not to be confused with the name of the town itself) bought it and ran it for a few years. His widow eventually leased it, or turned it over to her brother, C.P. Hazeltine, for a while. Eventually, the Ross & Brooks Lumber Co. bought it. Beyond this information, county histories seem to be vague and contradictory as to dates. The River in the foreground is the Wisconsin River which explains the early settlement of the area, being one of the more easily navigable rivers from a lumbering point of view. |
