SUMMARY
West Hill Residential Historic District
Generally bounded by Coleman Street to the north, Superior Street to the northeast, Central Street to the southeast, Governor Street to the southwest, and Dover Street to the northwest, Chippewa Falls, Chippewa County
Architect/Builder: George F. Barber; Fallows, Huey & Macomber; C.L. Bowes

The West Hill Residential Historic District is located just west of downtown Chippewa Falls, on a bluff overlooking the Chippewa River. The district contains 162 houses constructed between 1870 and 1958. The houses in the district reflect the economic ups and downs of Chippewa Falls and illustrate the range of architectural styles popular from the 1870s through the 1950s.

Many of the earliest inhabitants of the West Hill neighborhood were wealthy, influential residents of Chippewa Falls and their houses were designed to reflect their social status. Imposing Italianate houses stand side-by-side with elaborate Queen Anne houses built by lumber barons. The district’s tree-lined streets also contain simpler cottages and bungalows and even a few post-World War II ranch houses.

The collection of houses in the West Hill Residential Historic District provide a visual record of Chippewa Falls’ prosperity in the 19th and 20th centuries. The district is more than just a group of buildings, however. It ultimately symbolizes the transformation of Chippewa Falls from a frontier community to a modern, prosperous Midwestern city.

The houses in this district are private residences, please respect the privacy of the occupants.
