2007 Reuben Gold Thwaites Trophy for Local History Winner Announced
Mid-Continent Railway Historical Society Wins 2007 Thwaites Trophy
The Mid-Continent Railway Historical Society in North Freedom has earned the Wisconsin Historical Society's highest award in the field of local history — the 2007 Reuben Gold Thwaites Trophy.
The Mid-Continent Railway Historical Society and its railroad museum earned the award for dedication to preserving and interpreting the railroad legacy of the upper Midwest during the Golden Age of Railroads (1880-1916) for the educational benefit of the general public. The local historical society was founded in 1959 to perpetuate the heritage of steam railroads through the operation and exhibition of authentic railroad equipment.
Named for the Wisconsin Historical Society's second director, the Reuben Gold Thwaites Trophy recognizes one local historical society each year that has demonstrated a commitment to excellence and a record of success in collecting and preserving local history in its various forms.
The Wisconsin Historical Society Board of Curators' Awards Committee conferred the award at its meeting in Ashland on Saturday, June 9.
