Salary: $16.902 to $22.500 per hour depending on experience and qualifications, plus excellent benefits. This position is in pay schedule and range 13-04. A six-month probationary period will be required.

Introduction

The Wisconsin Historical Society is recruiting for an Archivist to manage and prepare collections for transfer to the Preservation Storage Facility.

Currently, this position works out of the Wisconsin Historical Society located on the University of Wisconsin Madison campus at 816 State Street. Once open, the position will work out of the Preservation Storage Facility located in the city of Madison.

Job Duties

Under the general supervision of the Collection Development Coordinator, this position is responsible for the preparation of all Library-Archives (L-A) collections intended for transfer to the Preservation Storage Facility (PSF). This overarching task involves professional actions to prepare collections, improve cataloging and barcoding, upgrade the housing, and plan for movement to the PSF. This position will coordinate PSF preparation with staff from all parts of the L-A Division, as well as the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research collections owned by the UW-Madison. This position will be responsible for coordinating the retrieval and use of collections preserved at the PSF. This work includes managing the circulation system, re-shelving materials, and stack maintenance. This position is responsible for guiding the work of two full-time staff, as well as temporary student workers, to ensure that L-A materials circulate efficiently and effectively and are properly housed and accurately shelved. This position recommends solutions to problems that may arise with the circulation system or collection space and provides general reference and digital document delivery services. In carrying out these duties this position will work with a great deal of independence and must apply research expertise and professional judgment to a wide-range of circumstances and situations.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of archival and/or records management standards, methods, theory, and practice, as typically acquired in an archives graduate school program or comparable certification.
  2. Knowledge/skills/ability with using MS office applications.
  3. Knowledge/skills/ability with database platforms for archival or library applications.
  4. Knowledge of library cataloging databases, such as Voyager or similar systems, including related circulation systems.
  5. Knowledge of and ability to use inventory control systems.
  6. Knowledge of basic library and archives preservation standards and techniques.
  7. Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and oversee the work of para- professional or student employees.
  8. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both in writing and verbally, with supervisors, colleagues, and other WHS staff.
  9. Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  10. Ability to repeatedly lift and move records containers weighing up to 40 pounds.
  11. Ability to hold a Wisconsin driver's license and drive a small cargo vehicle.
