Type of Employment: Part-Time 50% (20 hours/week). Monday through Thursday 4 pm to 9 pm. Occasional Saturday 8 am to 5 pm work will also be required on an occasional basis. Flexibility to work daytime hours when the University of Wisconsin is not in session is also necessary.
Salary: $16.902 to $22.500 per hour depending on experience and qualifications, plus excellent benefits ($17,645 to $23,490 annual salary). This position is in pay schedule and range 13-04. A six-month probationary period will be required.

Introduction
This position is located in the Library-Archives Division of the Wisconsin Historical Society in Madison. The Division supports the study of Wisconsin, United States and Canadian history by managing one of the largest history libraries and archives in the United States with library holdings of 3.9 million items and archives of 100,000 cubic feet. It is a depository for state and federal government publications and administers the Wisconsin State Archives, a repository for state and local government records.
In addition to its excellent Wisconsin collections, the Library-Archives is widely known for its national holdings in genealogy, newspapers and periodicals, mass communications history, social action, organized labor, and film and theater history. The Wisconsin Historical Society is located on the campus of the University of Wisconsin–Madison and provides reference services to a broad general public and academic audience.

Job Duties

This position is the sole permanent professional staff member working in the Wisconsin Historical Society Library during evening hours. Under the general supervision of the Administrative Manager (Director of Public Services) in the Society's Division of Library-Archives, the position directs and coordinates all Library services and activities during evening hours.

A Well Qualified Candidate Will Have:
- Masters Degree in Library Science with a background in academic reference.
- Basic knowledge of history.
- An understanding of historical research methods.
- Experience answering reference inquiries related to monographs and government publications.
- Experience providing outreach and the use of social media in libraries.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
- Excellent writing skills.
- Ability to work both collaboratively on a team as well as independently.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Advanced knowledge of accepted library policies and practices in the areas of reference and circulation as typically learned in a masters of library and information studies program.
- Basic knowledge of history.
- Basic knowledge of the methodologies and sources, physical and virtual, used in the study of history.
- Knowledge of and ability to use web based tools to create online research guides and update the Library’s campus webpage to facilitate access to information and learning by undergraduates.
- Expertise communicating with a community through social media.
- Expertise and skill in searching computer databases usually encountered in libraries, such as online public access catalogs, bibliographic databases, and full-text databases.
- Basic knowledge of government information at the federal, state, and local levels.
- Skill in dealing face-to-face with a wide variety of people, from different ethnic, educational and economic backgrounds and of varying intellectual and psychological capacities.
- Ability to advise and direct the work of student employees.
- Ability to express oneself concisely, accurately, and efficiently on paper and face-to-face, to individuals and to groups.
- Skill in routine maintenance and repair of information technology, such as photocopiers, computer terminals, microform readers, and printers.
- Effective computer skills, including word processing, data entry, and database searching as typically found in the Microsoft Office Suite.
