How Can You Help Protect Wisconsin’s Cemeteries?
Much of what we know about Wisconsin 's cemeteries comes from excavation. Some were conducted by amateurs or curious landowners, while others were undertaken by professional archaeologists. Today, all of Wisconsin 's cemeteries—no matter their age, and no matter what kind—are protected by State Law. Burial sites are rarely excavated any more, out of respect for the memory of the people buried in them. Instead, focus has shifted to cataloging and preservation.
The Wisconsin Historical Society has been directed to maintain a catalog of burial sites, so that we can help preserve the final resting places of Wisconsin 's residents—no matter how long ago they lived. How can you help? If you have information on a burial site and believe that the Wisconsin Historical Society is unaware of it, let us know! If you observe damage or disturbance to a burial site, contact us immediately!
